Sacred Heart School’s first La Salle Brother Principal
Brother Fridolin Gaughran (1915 - 1988) Francis Gaughran was born on the 15th of November 1915 in Trim, on the plains of County Meath, Ireland. He was always to hold a special affection for the County of his birth, the ancient seat of the high kings of Ireland. He was one of a family of seven children. They were brought up to love and serve God according to Catholic teaching. He received his early education at the local Primary school.
Class of 1986
“No retreat, no surrender” The 86ixers were the last batch of “English-medium” students. From the moment they entered Sacred Heart English Primary School, their destiny was such that they have no option of falling back (repeating). If they were to fail any of the major public exams, their only option would be to repeat the year and resit the exam in a completely different language, from English to Malay language. This would be a daunting task for many. Each public exam was, in many ways, a “do or die” battle, beginning with the then Primary Five Assessment Test, and then the Form 3, LCE (Lower Certificate of Education) to the Form 5, MCE (Malaysian Certificate of Examination), before their final Upper Six, HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate)
1978 – No Retreat, No Surrender
Yes, 1978 was a very tough year. Every point counts for all the Divisions. SHS was the organiser. Remember Boy A, Edmund Ling (400m) had an accident just b4 the meet. Tang Kee Tian was the reserve. Kee Tian was also down for 400m hundle. Boy B star strinter, Ah Fook had hamstring during the meet. Anyway, Boy A won by 2 pts (Methodist was 2nd place). Boy B won by 2 pts. (2nd placeTung Hua). Boy C won by a mere 1 pt. (Methodist was 2nd place). I remember SHS was the only school having "holiday" after the meet. Headline (sports section) I think... "Bitter pill for.. (.........) 'our rival schools' "
